New YouTube channel to help educate SMSF trustees and advisers
An SMSF specialist firm has developed a new resource to help educate trustees about the rules and regulations of owning a self-managed fund.
SMSF Alliance TV is a new adviser resource comprising a collection of 25 animated videos to assist advisers in educating their SMSF clients, covering everything from establishing an SMSF, contribution requirements and strategies, investments and administration and wind-ups.
“Advisers can refer trustees to our curated page, which includes ATO videos and suggested viewing combinations, or they can select specific videos directly from the SMSF Alliance TV YouTube channel,” said David Busoli, SMSF Alliance principal.
“Our collection is small but growing. We take a very practical approach so what we lack in numbers we make up for in relevance. I suspect that our ‘SMSFs vs Large APRA Funds’ video will garner considerable attention.”
He said the YouTube channel has been inspired by the ATO’s collection of animated, educational SMSF videos and utilises a similar format, but it also contains videos that the SMSF Alliance have created to enhance current ATO content.
Some of the content includes "Do You Qualify for an SMSF?" which focuses on why the ATO will reject an application and encourages trustee self-assessment before creating a fund.
Another, "SMSF Trustees – Individual vs Corporate", expands on the ATO video on the same topic, adding additional material facts.
The video, titled "Don’t Ignore the ATO", explains what happens if a new fund trustee is required to speak directly to the ATO and doesn’t, while "What Might the ATO Ask You" works in conjunction with the previous video and lowers the fear new trustees have that could prevent them from returning the ATO’s call, resulting in the cancellation of their application.
“Our videos are intended to be viewed in conjunction with the ATO’s educational video collection,” Mr Busoli said.
“Where we feel the ATO may not have covered enough, or the content isn’t very comprehensive we plan to produce one that could act as a replacement.”
You can watch videos on the SMSF Alliance TV page or subscribe to the SMSF Alliance TV YouTube channel.
